After Ike

Well it's been a while since I posted and not because we were blown away by hurricane Ike. You see, I had grand plans of posting lots of beautiful pictures from our Disney hurrication - believe me, I really got some good ones. The kids were enjoying them so much that they decided to view them on my camera to entertain themselves during church. Well, guess what got left at church - my camera! :( And still weeks later it has not been recovered. I think it will appear someday - I mean really of all places - no one would be stealing at church - right? So while I still mourn the loss of my pictures, I have come to terms with it and realize they won't be recovered for a long while if ever. (Lesson learned - download pictures immediately)

Anyway, we made it back to Texas safe and sound -just a little tired after hitting the Disney Parks hard everyday. But it was wonderful - definitely a great way to evacuate and squeeze in a vacation that was originally planned for October.

After being away though, we were anxious to return to see what had happened. On our drive home from the airport we saw lots of HUGE downed trees, ripped up roofs, broken windows, destroyed billboards (yes! I am especially glad that the Executive Adult video billboard that we pass on our way to church is gone - who are they kidding by trying to make something seedy sound more sophisticated?), and lots of areas of town still in the dark.

Because there are no really big trees in our neighborhood, we fared pretty well - part of our fence had blown out, we had a very dirty pool that ended up being the resting place for 2 rats and lots of debris, we lost quite a few shingles and just need a few patches, and had a bit of water damage on the upstairs ceiling but compared to many people I have talked to - we got off easy. We are still waiting for everything to be repaired but the insurance adjuster has come and we are just waiting for the quote.

(I stole these pictures from a friend - those are her cute kids)
In the aftermath of Ike (which happened to hit on one of my most favorite of days - Sept. 13th), everything was closed and life slowed down. While grocery stores around us had opened, they weren't fully stocked and they were very crowded, movie theaters were closed, all activities were canceled, and of course school was canceled for 1 1/2 weeks. My kids loved it but by the time they finally went back I was more than ready -I just wanted to get back to some sort of schedule.
So we are definitely all right, but hope we won't see another one of these storms for a VERY long time!

I'm so sad to hear you still don't have your camera. I was sure that you got it back by now. I guess someone else will have to enjoy scrapbooking your vacation to Disney. And I'm glad to hear the storm was productive in one way - getting rid of an ugly bill board! Glad you're safe and that your home is in good condition for us to visit during the cold winter!

I was wondering how you fared in the storm, and glad to hear it was a best case scenario. A couple dead rats though, eeewwww. I'm am positive your camera will turn up, bc, really, it just has to. I'd love to see your pics! Oh, and i've been meaning to email you...thank you for the package!! I got it on a Saturday and the kids were soooo excited to use the trays for Sunday dinner. We had to make sure there was something in every compartment. That was fun to open and loved the other trinkets in there too. And talk about late...I'm am the queen of late bday wishes now. I just can't seem to keep up. Help!

I feel for the loss of your camera. I lost a bunch of pictures Aaron & I took on our first camping trip by accidentally pushing the Format option. Note to self...don't do that again. Anyways, I'm glad you had a good time at Disney World and that your house survived better than could have been.

So glad your house only suffered minor damages. Dead rats....yuck! So sad to see all the destruction people are suffering. I'm sorry to hear about your camera too. I hope it turns up soon.
