The Nativity (Adapted)

Over the years we have developed a few Christmas traditions.  On Christmas Eve we heat the pool, eat soups and breads for dinner, act out the nativity, and enjoy birthday cake (or pie) for Jesus.  It is always more fun with friends and this year the cook family joined us for our festivities.  We had a great afternoon and then it was time for the Christmas message.  Each year the nativity seems to get a little more chaotic - Joseph (Charlie) wasn't too keen on his role, Kenna insisted that Cade (now 18 months) be the baby Jesus but he was not all that compliant, Max played Herod (the joy of being the bad guy) and a wise man, and I think Brett just opted out.  With Mike narrating, we all tried to participate.  I can only hope that some of the sacredness of that night so many years ago seeps through to the kids as we haphazardly narrate the events of Christ's birth.

Despite all, it was entertaining.  We followed up the enactment by playing carols on pipe chimes.  The Cooks brought their complete set and we all had fun hitting our chimes when our number was called.  It was a great way to do Christmas carols - my family was much more enthusiastic about this method than the plain old singing.  We ended the our celebrating with birthday pie and counted the presents in our Jesus stocking (all earned by doing good deeds).  It's been a full and fulfilling day.
