Holy Night

On Christmas Eve we invite a few friends over for swimming, soups, the nativity, and birthday cake for Jesus. Now that the tradition has been firmly established, the kids readily dress in costume, vying for their favorite parts.  It isn't always reverent but there are a few moments that make one pause - the tenderness shown toward a baby, the assisting of siblings and friends, and the reverence that can be felt when singing the words of "Silent Night".  It was a joyous reenactment.
This year both the Danners and the Cooks joined us and once again we played carols on the pipes.  What a fun tradition, as well as a great lesson on what we can accomplish when we all do our part and work together.  Who know a few pipes could make such pretty music.  We sang "Happy Birthday" to the Christ child and enjoyed delicious pies in his honor. I wonder, did someone long ago bring sweets to the Holy Family as they came and adored the newborn babe? You never know.

After everyone had gone, the kids all opened one present.  Kenna chose a cousin gift - American Girl crafts!, Max got new PSP games, and the boys were just content unwrapping paper.  We put those monkeys to bed but they were up till all hours stirring in their beds. Somehow the magic still happened that night.  The good must have outweighed the bad - it looks like we'll have some very happy children in the morning.
